Biography
Andrew Johnson was a self-made politician from Tennessee who rose from poverty to become the 17th President of the United States. Before his presidency, Johnson served as a congressman, senator, and military governor of Tennessee during the Civil War. His assumption of the presidency following Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865 proved controversial, as his lenient Reconstruction policies clashed with the Republican Congress, leading to his impeachment in 1868, though he was acquitted and completed his term.
