Biography
Benjamin Franklin Butler was a controversial Union general and politician known for his aggressive tactics during the Civil War and his radical Reconstruction policies. A Massachusetts native and lawyer, Butler gained notoriety for his administration of occupied New Orleans, where he issued the controversial 'Woman Order' and earned the nickname 'Beast Butler' from Southern civilians. After the war, he served in Congress and was known for his advocacy of civil rights and labor issues.
