H.W. Halleck

1815–1872

Biography

Henry Wager Halleck was a prominent Union general during the American Civil War, serving as General-in-Chief of the U.S. Army from 1862 to 1864. A West Point graduate and military theorist, Halleck earned the nickname "Old Brains" for his intellectual approach to warfare and his translations of military treatises. Though respected for his administrative abilities and strategic planning, his field command record was mixed, and he was eventually reassigned to administrative duties where he served until the war's end.
