Biography

James A. Garfield rose from humble origins in Ohio to become one of the most accomplished figures of the 19th century. He served with distinction as a major general in the Civil War, earning recognition for his leadership at the Battle of Chickamauga. Following the war, Garfield represented Ohio in Congress for nearly two decades before his election as the 20th President of the United States in 1880, though his presidency was cut short by his assassination in 1881.
