James Speed

Biography

James Speed was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky, and became one of the state's leading legal minds during the antebellum period. A strong Union supporter, he was appointed Attorney General by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864, serving during the final year of the Civil War and briefly under President Andrew Johnson. Speed was instrumental in legal proceedings related to the war effort and remained active in Kentucky politics and law practice throughout his career.
