Biography
Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker was a Union general known for his aggressive tactics and controversial personality during the American Civil War. Despite early promise and a reputation as a capable field commander, Hooker's most famous operation—the Chancellorsville campaign of 1863—ended in a surprising defeat to Robert E. Lee. He later served with distinction in the Western Theater and participated in Sherman's campaigns, though he never achieved the supreme command he desired.
