John Newton

Biography

John Newton was a distinguished Union general and accomplished military engineer who served throughout the American Civil War. He was chief engineer of the Army of the Potomac and later commanded the II Corps. Newton was known for his technical expertise and played important roles in siege operations and fortification work. After the war, he remained in the Army Corps of Engineers and oversaw major infrastructure projects.
