Biography

John Pope was a Union general who gained prominence during the American Civil War, serving in various commands including the Army of Virginia. Though he achieved early success in the Western Theater, his command of the Army of Virginia ended poorly after the Second Battle of Bull Run in 1862. Despite this setback, Pope continued to serve in important administrative and field positions throughout the war and remained active in the military for decades afterward, eventually becoming a major general.
