Biography
John Aaron Rawlins was a trusted aide and chief of staff to General Ulysses S. Grant throughout the American Civil War, playing a crucial role in the Union's military operations. A lawyer by training, Rawlins brought organizational skill and strategic insight to Grant's headquarters, and his loyalty and competence earned him Grant's deep respect and affection. After the war, Rawlins continued his association with Grant, serving as Secretary of War under the Grant administration until his death in 1869.
