Biography
Samuel Davis Sturgis was a Union general and career military officer who served throughout the American Civil War. A West Point graduate, Sturgis commanded cavalry and infantry units in various campaigns, though his military reputation was somewhat diminished after the Battle of Brice's Cross Roads in 1864, where his forces were defeated by Confederate cavalry under Nathan Bedford Forrest. He continued his military career after the war, serving in Reconstruction and frontier posts.
