Biography

Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert was a career U.S. Army officer who achieved the rank of general during the Civil War. A graduate of West Point, Torbert served with competence in cavalry operations, particularly in the Eastern Theater under General Philip Sheridan. After the war, he continued his military service in various capacities, including command of the Department of the Gulf and later diplomatic assignments, representing American interests in foreign military matters.
